    The other part of the magic is that he knows about RUclips and the algorithm. By making a riddle in a video that we have to go back to figure out over and over again, it makes the RUclips algorithm promote this video even more because we're spending more time on it. Then he gets a highlighted comment and sends even more people to his page.

    He misdirects on the first solution. He quite clearly says "Using nothing except for these items - a candle, some pushpins and some matches". This rule explicitly excludes the box. He would need to say "a box of pushpins" to allow the box. So when he says you can use to box to find the solution that is "in plain sight", he is violating the very rules he specified. This itself may be a total misdirection to "prove his point", and expects us to fall for it, which most of us do (and yes, I did till thinking about it further) . . . unless he simple forgot to say a "box of pushpins", but in this case he did, so his solution is invalid for the rules given. Note that the original Karl Duncker test did in fact include the box.

      @@deanfalzon7973 I'm not saying that the point is wrong, but that his example was not valid. He explicitly limits the "info" to specific items. Your solution is to ignore the problem he actually gives and generalize - in which case essentially you can bring in anything else you can think of, and there would be many many ways of solving this problem , and it no longer is a "thought experiment" really.

    For all of my life, I have been criticized and misjudged based on any of these three common ways of the thinking. I'm very creative. My ideas are often either noticed and positively embraced or ridiculed. However, if people were to suspend these three limits, then they would be able to see the creativity in problem-solving and improve the situation more efficiently and effectively. Suspend quick judgments. Consider creative alternatives to answer the challenges at-hand.
    1. Misconceptions.
    Reassess the details to bring the information to surface in order to improve cognitive thinking.

    This is great for awareness that our brains are wired such that we default to certain assumptions or more complicated ways of problem solving. The "school bus direction" problem is a pristine example of how adults complicate things whereas children aren't as biased. Again, great talk and information that proves the point. Question is: What tools exist that we can utilize that help us overcome this? Most viewers will leave this video never to research and benefit from the powerful outcomes that we witnessed...knowing that it can be transformative in our lives. We just toss away a potentially radical new way of thinking that may lead us to our own greatness...so to speak.

    To be fair, it would've been more honest to say something like "a box of push-pins." When you only mention the pins per se, it conveys the notion that only the pins are in the list of items to be used. Then it's not really a matter of cognitive bias; we just weren't given the box to use.

      @jsf96 Год назад +11

      That's the point he was trying to make, just because he didn't mention the box doesn't mean you can't use it. I even fell for it too, for the exact reason you're commenting about.

      I would suggest that you fold the dollar bill into an accordion shape with ridges. Then it is strong enough to support the salt shaker. The design is shown on the back of the playing cards.

    Turn the bottle upside down, pour another drink (from another bottle of champagne I guess, since he messed up the word order with that challenge, changing the context of it) into the concave area at the bottom of the champagne bottle, and sip. You just drank from a champagne bottle without opening it.

      We're in lies another problem. The entire bottle wasn't shown to us. Those who have never seen or felt a champagne bottle in their hand would not know of the recess at the bottom.

      I was like "Wait, there are 3 diamonds (K, Q, J) but 2 clubs and 1 spade." So I chose the king of clubs, thinking that he wanted us to pick the Jack of Spades for this exact reason, and in the next round I noticed that there was suddenly a Jack of clubs instead of the jack of spades like in the first round.

    He says "drink FROM the bottle without opening it." The bottle has a cup-shaped bottom. Turn the bottle upside-down, pour champagne into its bottom from ANOTHER champagne bottle, and drink THAT champagne from the bottom of the first UNOPENED bottle. The face-cards are the clue. Notice that the king, queen and jack are both right-side up and up-side down.

    Dude just casually did one of the most fundamental classes in history. No one NEVER teach us to think and see reality like and see magic as a hobo job, unworthy of respect. I got here by searching function fixedness and this expect to be used in magic or that i would know 3 concepts that would save my live, one of the most remarkable one was "complex problem needs a complex solution" fallacy, i ALWAYS assume that. Standing applause well deserved and this should get more views.

    Of course it’s easy to claim I “knew” it (candle / box ) from my couch but… I knew it. Being functionally fixed is a real thing but being a rule follower not a rule bender is as much a part of the problem. That rebel in your elementary school is more likely to be the guy or girl that went on to create something special.

    • @jphilrose

      As I mention above, the box is disallowed by the rules he specifies. The misdirection here is making you think using the box is the "answer in plain sight". It isn't. Listen to his rules again which is preceded by "nothing except". Otherwise you can use use pretty much anything else on the table, or anything you might find in the auditorium . Just because one of the items allowed is in a box does not mean the box fits the rules he specified. It does not. (Note: the original Karl Dunker test DID include the box!)
